Webster, NY - An American flag flies at the shrine to honor fallen firefighters on Lake Road in Webster.
The memorial is filled with flowers and statues. It sits on the spot where the firefighters were shot.
Across the street is what's left of homes destroyed in the fire set by the killer that day.
Neighbors said they will never forget what happened, and will not stop honoring the first responders who gave their lives that day.
But, many said they are trying to move on.
One couple who lost their home said they have hired architects, and will rebuild. They hope to be in their new home by next Christmas.
That couple has lived there since 1972 and said nothing will keep them from rebuilding the home they loved.
They were also the ones who saw the smoke, heard the shots and called 911.
It's something that is traumatic even to this day.
They lived next door to the killer and never knew he would one day destroy their neighborhood and kill firefighters who responded to put out the flames, not knowing they were being targeted.
Other neighbors honor the firefighters with signs in the windows that read: "God Bless Our First Responders."
We found Keith Fader and Greg Lehman walking past the burned out homes on Lake Road. Both have spent years boating in this area and have friends who lost homes in the ambush.
They said it is sad for families whose loved ones were killed and frustrating for those displaced from their homes.
Mark Ingoglia said a prayer at the memorial honoring the firefighters.
The fire captain from Kingston, New York attended the funerals in December.
He didn't have a chance then to visit the shrine and pay respects, so he came back Wednesday morning.
He left an emblem from his fire department at the shrine. He told us he hoped this memorial will be an everlasting reminder of this tragedy.
Ingoglia said firefighters never know what to expect when they hear the fire tones go off for a call.
But, the last thing they expect to happen, is for someone to shoot them and set a fire to cover up the crime.
