Greece, N.Y. – Local fire departments continue to help some of the people hardest hit by Superstorm Sandy.
Volunteer firefighters say it's their way to help from afar those they know have a long road ahead of them.
Members from the Greece Fire Departments went on four deployments to Freeport, New York, helping those hard hit by Sandy, and weeks later they are continuing to help. Through December 4th the department will be collecting small toys, pet supplies, canned goods, and books.
Volunteer firefighter Al Camp says it was tough working along side fire fighters who were also devastated by the storm - part of the reason they want to continue to help.
“It's a token effort we realize this isn't the final solution that it's going to take years of rebuilding,” said Camp. “It’s the small effort that we could do just to take something off their backs for a little while. Just give them some comfort over the holidays.”
Camp says they are not accepting clothing, blankets, bedding or cash. Donations will be collected at all Greece Fire Departments, the Town Greece Offices, the Greece library and First Baptist Church.
The firefighters plan to deliver the items to hurricane victims on December 8th.
