Greece, N.Y. – It may have been a windy day on Lake Ontario, but this wind is far from Kathie Byrne's mind as she prepares for Hurricane Sandy.
“Just trying to pick up the yard a little bit,” said Byrne, who lives along the lake. “Making sure nothing gets picked up and blown into the glass; trying to secure everything down.”
Byrne hopes the lake’s low water level will be in their favor, down the lake; homeowner David Bell agrees.
“We do have some protection because of the lower levels in recent months, with the recent drought,” said Bell.
But that's not keeping Bell complacent - he and his wife are ready to evacuate on a moment's notice.
“The best protection we have is to get in our cars and drive away if the water levels get high,” said Bell.
The National Weather Service is predicting waves on Lake Ontario will be between 16 and 22-feet - this prediction caused the United States Coast Guard located at the port to move their boats up the river.
Monroe County has made sandbags available to communities along the lake. So far, only the Town of Webster has collected any. They picked up 200 Sunday.
