Rochester, N.Y. – As Hurricane Sandy bears down on Cuba and barrels toward Florida, forecasters are seeing the potential for the storm to march up the coast and over Western New York.

Should that happen, the Rochester area could see a tremendous amount of rain, which would then raise the prospect of heavy flooding.

Thursday, Governor Cuomo asked emergency services across the state to keep tabs on Sandy’s progress.

“We’ll keep an eye on the reports throughout the weekend and monitor the situation,” said Fred Rion, head of Monroe County Emergency Management.

Rion says his department is taking stock of its sandbags and reaching out to various municipalities to gauge the area’s readiness.

Meanwhile, the local Department of Transportation operation is making sure its wood chippers are in working order should fierce wind knock off branches and down trees.

To help prevent flooding, you can make sure the leaves you blow or rake to the curb don't cover storm drains.

Also, now is a good time to clear out your gutters.
