Gorham, N.Y. - The 3-year-old boy in a jet ski crash on Canandaigua Lake Wednesday afternoon has died from his injuries, according to the Ontario County Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office says Samuel Pierson died just after 10 p.m. Wednesday.
His mother, Kerry Pierson of Fairport, was also injured in the crash when her jet ski slammed into a cement barrier at the lake's edge.
Kerry Pierson is in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.
The Sheriff's Office says the jet ski accelerated suddenly just before the crash, but they don't know why. They hope to talk to Kerry Pierson once her condition improves.
Sheriff Phil Povero says there was no reckless operation and no alcohol or drug involvement. He says this appears to be a tragic accident.
Kerry Pierson and her son Samuel were both wearing safety vests, which are required. Kerry had also recently completed a safety course to operate a jet ski.
The Pierson family lives in Fairport. Neighbors tell us they are a beautiful family.
Those who know them tell us they are heartbroken and shocked.
