New Hartford, N.Y. - The family of Alexandra Kogut is expressing their gratitude for all the support the community has shown.

18 year old Alexandra was killed inside her freshman dorm room at the College at Brockport and her boyfriend - 21 year old Clayton Whittemore has been charged with second-degree murder.

The statement from the family reads -

"We are humbled and grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of support and sympathy that we have received from the whole community. Every purple blouse, ribbon, Facebook post, balloon and even the tiniest purple painted fingernail reminds us of our dear Alex. Please know that it is your thoughts, prayers and love that have sustained us through these difficult days.  We know Alex is smiling down in appreciation of the warmth and compassion you have shown. It is the memory of that beautiful smile that will ultimately heal us."

Kogut's funeral is being held Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Church in New Hartford.
