Albion, N.Y. - A breach on the south wall of the Erie Canal in Albion has closed the canal for repairs.

Orleans County Administrator Charles H. Nesbitt, Jr. said the sinkhole was created Monday night on Albion-Eagle Harbor Road between Gaines Basin Road and State Street.

Nearly 200 tons of stone have been hauled into Albion to repair the sink hole. The size of the damage is estimated at a size of 60 feet in diameter and 16 feet deep.

While repairs are being made, the Erie Canal locks will be closed in both Holley and Albion to prevent traffic through the area.

Albion-Eagle Harbor Road, between Gaines Road and State Street, will be closed for an extended period of time.
