Washington D.C. - New details have been released from the State Department about the attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya that left four Americans dead, including the U.S. Ambassador.

The new information comes out before a major Congressional hearing on the attacks set for Wednesday.

The State Department now says there was not a protest going on outside before the attack, as originally reported.

The first indication that there was a problem was an explosion and the sound of gunfire.

Those inside looked in a camera and saw a large number of armed men approaching the compound.

A senior State Department official says this was a very complex attack, the likes of which have never been seen in Libya.

It has also been revealed that a State Department security official in Libya had requested more security measures in the weeks leading up to the attack.

The official says he received a response saying instead the objective was to "normalize operations".

Another document details 230 security incidents in Libya between June 2011 and July of this year.
