Churchville, N.Y.— It’s that time of year when Girl Scouts start delivering their cookies.

But for the American soldiers serving overseas, it’s a treat they miss out on and one local Girl Scout troop is trying to change that.

The first grade Daisy Girl Scouts of Troop 60638 out of Fairbanks Road School in the Churchville-Chili school district have collected more than 130 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to send to the Rochester-based National Guard Medial Evacuation Unit in Afghanistan.

Troop leader Michele Graves says the idea came about when her husband, a soldier in the unit, left for Afghanistan. He loves Girl Scout cookies and when Graves discovered there was a “Donation” option on the Girl Scout cookie order form, she presented the idea to send the cookies to Afghanistan to the troop’s parents.

“The parents were all very eager and helpful,” says Graves.

This week, the troop packed up the 130 boxes donated by friends, family and members of the community. With the cookies, the girls wrote personal letters to the soldiers, thanking them for their service and wishing them a safe return home.

The girls hope that the cookies will be a nice surprise for the soldiers.

“I think that Girl Scout cookies come around right around the holidays and it's a piece of home,” says Graves.

The troop is now looking to collect donations to help ship the cookies to Afghanistan. The shipping costs amount to about $215.00 but the troop is trying to collect more to fill the boxes with other items the soldiers would like like candy, socks and beef jerky.
