Greece, N.Y. – Steve Lochner, of Greece, wanted to lose weight.

“337 is where I finally said enough is enough,” Lochner said.

He downloaded a free app called Lose It onto his phone.

The app helps people count calories.

“I started doing it on Feb. 5 of 2012 and a year later I’m 96 lbs. lighter,” he said.

Bohdan Krop, a personal trainer at Tall Trainer Fitness in Canandaigua, said it’s simple math: you have to take in less than you burn.

“Research shows you can't out-exercise a bad diet,” Krop said.

Krop said many of the calorie-counting apps out there expose those bad diets.

“Many people aren't aware they are eating that much food,” he said.

The app then offers what many diet programs cannot: convenience.

“If you have to spend hours on the computer or looking things up, you're not going to log that, but if you can log it even while you're eating, you address that convenience factor,” Krop said.

Krop, who suggests another free diet app called Vitabot, said you’ll lose weight faster if you add exercise into the mix.

That’s exactly what Lochner did.

He's now nearing that 100-pound mark.

“It’s been an absolute life changer,” he said. “My kids are happy, my wife is happy, I’m happy.”
