Rochester, N.Y. – Maggie Brooks announced a run for Congress Monday morning.
"It's time to take the Monroe County success story to Washington," Brooks said at her announcement Monday morning. "It's time to show our country what they can learn from our county.
Brooks just started her third term as Monroe County Executive.
Her opponent will be longtime Democratic incumbent Louise Slaughter, who has been in office since 1987.
In a statement, Slaughter said, "As I’ve stated publicly many times, I am again asking for the support of my friends and neighbors to continue being your representative in Congress."
The redistricting process puts both women, who are popular with voters, in the same Monroe County-centered district.
"I think it will be a terrific matchup," said political analyst Curt Smith. "You’ve got two candidates that are so well known they don’t even need a last name. You’ve simply got Maggie and Louise and everyone knows who you mean."
Smith thinks the race will be very expensive and get national attention.
