Brockport, N.Y.—For more than 20 years, David Schickler has been delivering mail for the United States Postal Service. While is route may stay the same, the routine for mail delivery on Saturdays will end. The USPS announced Wednesday that it will stop delivering mail on Saturdays starting in August.
“Unfortunately in the world of business some things have got to change in order to stay in business,” said Schickler.
Post Office branches will remain open on Saturdays, and package deliveries, a growing part of its business, will still be made.
“We don’t want to shoot ourselves in the foot in a market that is growing,” said Karen Mazurkiewicz, a spokesperson for the USPS.
Most customers approached by 13WHAM News said the change won’t bother them.
“Whatever mail I would get on Saturday I’ll just get on Monday,” said Rene Sugar.
But there are workers who are concerned.
“It’s going to cost people their jobs,” said Schickler.
The change is expected to save the USPS about $2 billion.
