Newark, N.Y. – One person was shot in Newark about 5 a.m. Friday, according to the Newark Police Department.

The shooting happened at a home at 608 Silver Hill Road.  Police say the suspect knocked on the front door, but was told by the victim to go to the back door. When the man inside went to answer that door, the suspect shot through the door, hitting the man in the buttocks.

The victim, a 42-year old man, was airlifted to Strong Hospital with a serious gunshot wound. Police say they have several of witnesses and are searching for a suspect.

Chief David Christler tells 13WHAM News, "I don't believe there is a danger to the community. This is a situation where either the victim knew the perpetrator or was doing some business with the perpetrator.  It's not a case where you have someone going around randomly breaking into homes or things like that."
