Albany, N.Y. - New York's State Assembly passed a bill to allow medical marijuana in the state.

Under the proposal, doctors could prescribe it for  patients with life-threatening or debilitating conditions.

Medical marijuana is currently legal in 17 other states and in the District of Columbia.

Efforts to allow marijuana for medicinal purposes have fallen short in 16 prior attempts in the state legislature.
