Rochester, N.Y.---Since the moment Haiti was struck by the 7.0-magnitude earthquake more than a week ago, Dr. James Sanders said he has been anxious to help the many injured people of Haiti.
Sanders, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at the University of Rochester Medical Center has been working on the logistics of organizing a trip, and now has a plane and a plan.
He and several other members of the URMC staff will leave Wednesday aboard a plane full of medical supplies and arrive in Port-Au-Prince Thursday.
“I think most people go into this because they really want to help, and this is an obvious time when people really need it,” Sanders said.
In the past, Sanders has traveled abroad to give medical assistance, but never in a situation like the one he’ll soon enter.
“I’ve been to developing countries before, so I’ve done that sort of thing," he said. "Obviously, the whole disaster thing is new and it’s going to be--probably an eye-opener.”
The trip is part of the Haiti relief effort carried out by Cure International.
Sanders will be traveling with colleagues from URMC and others from elsewhere in the country.
The local group also includes pediatric anesthesiologist Dawn Sweeny, hand surgeon John Elfar, and senior orthopedic resident John Gabel.
