Rochester, N.Y. --- In the final hours of the campaign two of the biggest names in Monroe County politics are focused on the exact same thing; Get Out The Vote.
For Democrat Louise Slaughter and Republican Maggie Brooks that means picking up the phone themselves and making calls to prospective voters just like the dozens of volunteers who surround them are headquarters.
"If we win it's going to be because of the people that came in here and worked," Rep. Slaughter said Monday morning. "Frankly I've never seen such an army of volunteers not since I first ran in 1986. In 1986 a thousand people took off Election Day to help us get the vote out, we still only won by about 3,600 votes.”
"I feel a lot of momentum I feel like the wind is at our back and I'm optimistic that tomorrow could be a good day for us," County Executive Brooks said Monday afternoon. "Obviously the candidates have done their jobs, the ads are on television the mail has been delivered really now it's up to the voters to go out and make their choice and so we just want to make sure that they understand their voice is important and their vote matters."
New York’s newly drawn 25th Congressional District includes most of Monroe County and voter registration leans in favor of Democrats. Throughout the campaign three Siena College polls have placed Rep. Slaughter in the lead.
Yet both candidates know the only poll that counts is the one that opens at 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
