Hornell, N.Y. - In a statement issued Monday morning, Hornell Mayor Shawn Hogan removed himself from consideration for the 29th District Congressional seat.  Rep. Eric Massa is set to resign that seat Monday evening at 5 p.m.

Hogan had been considered one of the top Democrats likely to enter the race to be Massa's replacement.  That could be via special election if N.Y. Gov. David Paterson decides to schedule one.

Hogan said Massa called Paterson last week prior to announcing that the first-year congressman would not seek re-election.  Hogan said Massa considered him an ideal replacement.

With Hogan out of any potential race, Democrats are likely to consider Monroe County District Attorney Mike Green, N.Y. State Assemblyman David Koon, various mayors and town supervisors within the 29th District, and potentially, private businessman and former Bausch & Lomb executive David Nachbar of Pittsford.

Hogan's statement below:

Press Release from the Office of Shawn D. Hogan, Mayor

City of Hornell, New York

After much consultation with family, friends and friendly political allies and prayerful

contemplation, I have decided not to pursue the 29th District Congressional seat that will become vacant with the resignation of Congressman Eric Massa at 5PM this day March 8th 2010.

I choose not to run, not because I am afraid of the challenge, I still have a great desire to serve.  However the atmosphere in politics today is toxic, fueled by extremism on both sides of the aisle.  Americans deserve and want leadership from our elected officials not 30 second sound bites and destructive behavior.  We need honor and common sense in Washington and Albany.

That being said I have a profound love of my community and its Citizens and I have an obligation to continue to move this community forward.  We are currently faced with many challenges and I plan on honoring my commitment to the City of Hornell.

I pray for a change in the political environment in this Country and we must pull together to solve the problems we face as a City, State and Nation, and we must do so without hate and anger. We must find the common ground that is necessary to solve our problems together.
