Albany and NY 29th District - A press release from Governor Paterson’s Office explains that he intends to schedule a Special Election in the NY-29th District for November 2nd. That would be Election Day. This seat has remained vacant following the resignation of Eric Massa.
The Governor cites numerous reasons as to why he’s made this decision. There are concerns of the rollout of electronic voting machines in a Congressional District that encompasses all or parts of eight different counties. The Governor also lists concerns over the cost to fiscally strapped counties and the possible disenfranchisement of overseas military voters.
A special election must be scheduled 30 to 40 days following a Gubernatorial Proclamation that the NY-29th District seat is actually vacant.
Paterson intends to make that proclamation in September or early October to abide by the law -- to hold this election on Nov. 2, 2010.
The winner of the November 2 election could be sworn into office as early as November 3. S/he would then be sworn in again in January 2011 with the rest of Congress.
