Rochester, N.Y. – Shoveling: a task many found themselves doing Saturday morning, including John White, who we found working on his driveway on Edgemere Drive in Greece.

“It's a little rough. There's a lot of snow,” White said. “But the neighbors are helping each other out and we're getting the job done.”

Getting a head start was nearly impossible for White and his neighbors. The weather was just too bad for them to work outside Friday night.

“The windows were all iced up, the snow as hitting the house hard,” White said. “We couldn't even get outside, so it was pretty horrendous.”

The storm kept body shops busy. At Nu Look Collision Center in Gates, phones rang off the hook during the storm. At least a dozen cars were towed in. Employees anticipate more will come in on Monday.

“We've been seeing a lot of tow-ins,” said manager Jacob Burris. “A lot of cars sliding off the roads needing to get towed out of ditches.”

But what was pain for some, was pleasure for others. The Kickball League of Rochester embraced conditions at Genesee Valley Park.

“We have the snow anyway,” said organizer Ryan Kimball. “You might as well get out and enjoy it.”

Lacing up and enjoying it was exactly what some friends in Gates were doing – playing hockey on a homemade rink. Homeowner and rink builder Paul Matejcik almost gave up on this year’s Winter Classic Tournament, but hard work and dedication kept this round-robin tournament alive.

“We shoveled four to five times last night, and then every time we got a little bit of snow this morning,” said Matejcik, “just to keep the ice hard.”

And the hard work paid off. This year’s tournament was success. Even the Matejcik’s yellow lab, Maizie, slid around the rink grabbing every puck she could.

So far for 2013, Friday was the snowiest day of the year.
