Albany, N.Y. - New York's State Senate passed a bill Tuesday to ban the sale of salvia.
The herb is chewed or smoked to induce illusions and hallucinations, according to the federal Drug Enforcement Agency.
Known as salvia divinorum, it's currently sold on the Internet and in stores without any age restrictions.
"Too many families in our communities have been affected by the ongoing fight against drugs," said State Senator John Flanagan. "Parents need to know that New York State is taking steps to help win that important fight."
Under the new law, violators would face a fine of up to $500 per violation.
The measure still needs approval in the New York State Assembly, and Governor Andrew Cuomo's signature before it becomes law.
