Rochester, N.Y. – With ever changing technology, New York state police started training on how to handle electric and hybrid vehicles in an accident.

They are the first police officers in the nation to receive such training.

In Henrietta, the fire department says they use an app when they come across an electric or hybrid car in an accident - that tells them how to handle the situation.

“On a typical gas car we’re pretty familiar with where things are located and the features on it,” said Henrietta Fire Chief Jim Comstock. “Where when we get to the hybrid you’re not only dealing with the things you’d normally find on a gas vehicle, you’re also finding the electrical components that give us a bit of an extra problem when we’re working on them.”

The state police training is taking place in Albany. One investigator and three troopers from our area were there today. Another training session is scheduled for next month.
