(Rochester, N.Y.)-Injured Rochester Police Officer Anthony DiPonzio will throw out the first pitch at the Rochester Red Wings’ home opener next month.
DiPonzio was shot in the line of duty on January 31, and is undergoing therapy at the brain injury unit of St. Mary’s Hospital.
“This will really give our entire community a platform to say thanks and honor him for his courage and his bravery and for his service to our community,” said Red Wings General Manager Dan Mason.
Mason says opening day usually brings between 7,000 and 11,000 people to the ballpark, and he expects peoples’ interest in seeing DiPonzio could bring even more.
The game is scheduled for April 11 at Frontier Field.
