Chili, N.Y. – Charles Keiser was sitting on his couch when the call went out.
A house nearby had caught fire.
The volunteer Chili firefighter raced over and was first on scene.
Judy Ogg had just escaped the fire and told him three others were inside: her daughter-in-law, Katelyn, 4-year-old grandson, R.J. and infant granddaughter, Mara.
Keiser was the one who carried R.J. to safety.
All four were hospitalized afterward.
Catelyn and Mara remain in the hospital, but are recovering and will likely be released soon.
Judy Ogg and R.J. headed to Chili’s town hall Wednesday night to personally thank everyone involved in their rescue.
The group was being recognized for their efforts on that January day.
Judy’s son, Joe, was also in the audience.
“Everything went in such a horrible direction and they turned it around and I just feel lucky,” Joe Ogg said.
At the end of the ceremony, Keiser gave R.J. something he lost in the fire: a Spiderman costume.
Judy Ogg approached him afterwards and told him that gift came from a different superhero.
“You’re Superman,” she said.
