Penfield, N.Y. -- Heather Boyum was a devoted teacher, mother and athlete.

"She's awesome and had this big smile and you could just hear her laugh from down the hall," Boyum's former student Diana Weber tells 13WHAM News.

Weber was in Boyum's AP Biology class her senior year. Weber says Boyum was a teacher who made sure her students would succeed.

"She was right there for assistance if we needed it," Weber said.

Boyum often talked about her passion outside the classroom; her love of diving and bike riding. She was a triathelete and just completed her half of the Ironman.

"She loved biking, she'd be excited whenever she got a new bike or new equipment," Weber said.

So it was no surprise Boyum was on the road early Sunday morning. She was on Fairport Nine Mile Point Road near Bainbridge Road when police say 22-year-old Mark Scerbo II hit her with his motorcycle.

Boyum was thrown from her bike, onto the road.

That's when Scerbo's girlfriend, 23- year-old Megan Merkel ran over Boyum with her car.

Police say Scerbo was riding his motorcycle recklessly, speeding and slowing down and doing wheelies at the time of the crash.

Boyum was rushed to Strong Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Shock for those who knew Boyum as a great mother, wife and teacher.

"This is devastating and I am so upset right now and I feel so bad for their family and we’re going to try to do anything we can for them," neighbor Joanne Pfeifer said.

"I'm just in awe of her ability to balance life so well. She found something that she loved to do," Weber said.  "She still had time to be with her family and you could tell that she loved her kids and husband very, very much."

Boyum had two small children.

Merkel was arrested for DWI. Scerbo is at Strong Memorial Hospital recovering from serious injuries. Police are looking at possible charges for him, but they're awaiting blood test results.

13WHAM has also learned that this is not Scerbo's first run in with the law.

According to the New York State Correctional website, Scerbo was just released from prison. He had served time for DWI.

Police are still investigating and say additional charges may be considered in this case.
