Rochester, N.Y. – Who says playgrounds are just for children?
Over the past few years, Rochester has installed outdoor exercise equipment at several playgrounds. The exercise equipment is available at the Troup St., Maplewood and Edgerton Park playgrounds.
The adult equipment has been a big hit. Users say like the fact the apparatus are outdoors, free and fun.
“I’ve been in the neighborhood for a long time,” said Lauren Radcliff, who lives near Troup St. “When I saw the equipment, I said, how smart!”
“I think it’s a good idea. It’s a great process to get parents outside to exercise with the kids and the kids to get outside and exercise,” said Princess Swank.
“I think it’s great. It encourages fitness, which we definitely need today with our problems going on with obesity,” said Larry Tyler, who sometimes does chin-ups at the playgrounds.
Each piece of equipment, made by California company TriActive, costs $3,000 to $4,000. The city hopes to add up to eight more playgrounds.
The city is also focusing on indoor fitness activities. The Gantt and South Ave. recreation centers are in line for adult fitness centers. The facilities are under renovation.
