Rochester, N.Y. — About two dozen parishioners gathered at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester to pray for the victims of the Connecticut school shooting.
“We were actually going to go Christmas caroling,” said Chris Blomgren, a Palmyra resident. “It wasn’t on our heart to — it wasn’t there.”
A priest discussed the emotions of fear, anger and sadness but asked for those attending the prayer vigil to pray for not only for the victims, but the family of the shooter.
Some found comfort in the priest's words as well as the presence of others of similar faith.
“Just a sense of coming together as a community,” said Mary Blomgren. "You feel so helpless when something like this happens."
Jeanie Wolfs said she spoke at length with her mother about the school shooting before coming to the vigil. Wolfs, 16, said she understands what has happened and has tried to keep a positive attitude. That said, as a babysitter, she can't help but think of the young children she watches, and that those killed are the same age.
