(AP) - President Barack Obama is honoring the six adults killed in the Newtown, Conn., school shooting with the Presidential Citizens Awards.

The President presented the medal to the educators' family members in a White House ceremony, saying they gave their lives to protect the children in their care.

Twenty children died in the attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School, but many others were saved by adults who sacrificed themselves, Obama said at a White House ceremony.

The Newtown honorees: Rachel Davino, Anne Marie Murphy, Lauren Rousseau, Victoria Soto, Mary Sherlach and Dawn Hochsprung.

The Presidential Citizens Medal is the nation's second-highest civilian honor.
