Rochester, N.Y. – An accident can happen in an instant. Readiness cannot.
Rochester firefighters train dozens of hours a month should they called out to a rescue.
In the last four days, they've been called to three, all of them in the water.
“That’s one thing firefighters do, they may not see the same things every day, but we’re always ready to act upon anything we come across,” said Willie Lopez, a member of Rochester’s rescue team.
The first call came in Monday from Genesee Valley Park where a fisherman had fallen in the canal.
When rescue crews arrived, there was nothing they could do.
“It’s part of the job, you go in there and do our job, we have each other and we talk about these type of these things,” Lopez said.
On Tuesday, firefighters used ropes to rescue three stranded hikers from the Genesee River Gorge.
Firefighters were called back out to Genesee Valley Park Wednesday for another fall into the Erie Canal.
This time two children strapped into a stroller fell into the water.
“I think the best therapy is to get back out there and do it tomorrow,” Lopez said.
