Rochester, N.Y.- A 17-year-old from Rochester pleaded guilty Friday to his role in the shooting death of a 53-year-old man last New Year’s Eve.

Robert Lathrop pleaded guilty to felony murder charges in the death of Matthew SanFilippo.

Prosecutors say Lathrop and an accomplice attempted to rob the victim on Orchard Street.

SanFilippo was shot during the incident and died at the scene.

In a statement Friday, Perry Duckles of the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office said, “The death of Matthew Sanfilippo is a startling example of the type of violence that everyone fears; completely random, wholly pointless, and tremendously brutal.”

Lathrop, who was 16 at the time of the murder, will be sentenced December 12. He faces between 18 and 20 years to life in prison.
