Rochester, N.Y. – If you bike anywhere in the city of Rochester, you’ve probably noticed some changes to the roads over the past few months that have made them more biker friendly.
“It's a step in the right direction,” says Shana Lydon who manages Full Moon Vista Bike Shop in Rochester and also happened to be out cycling on University Ave. Saturday afternoon.
University Avenue is the latest route to become more accommodating to bikers with transportation crews painting “sharrows,” onto the road.
“Sharrows are share the road type arrows,” explains Chris Keiser who works at Towners Bike Shop along University Ave.
So far, the city has worked to paint 11 miles of bike lanes and shared use lanes through out the city.
“Hopefully this helps drivers share the road a little more,” Lydon adds.
The master plan calls for an estimated $45,000 of bike lanes to be put down across the city, totaling more than 50 miles once the project is done within the next two years.
