Rochester, N.Y. - There's been a jump in violent crimes in the City of Rochester.
According to police, this year there were 29 homicides through September--compared to 21 during the same time period last year.
Shootings are also up 79%. That's the highest total in five years.
However, homicides are below the 10-year average.
Rochester police say they know the groups involved behind the shootings and the murders.
"It’s a cause and effect relationship; they drive it,” said Deputy Chief Mike Wood. “If you’re shooting and killing people, we're coming after you--your group---your entire group."
To curtail violence, police have begun patrolling the city's most crime-ridden areas in greater numbers in "Operation Cool Down."
