Rochester, NY - Alpha Phi Alpha only has one member who lives on the University of Rochester Campus. But the city-wide fraternity has other members at the College at Brockport and RIT.
The fraternity doesn't have a house, so it asked permission to hold a non-alcoholic party for 300 in the college dining hall. Three safety officers and at least one faculty member were present. But 600 students showed up and early on the morning on September 12, things got rowdy.
"It was a melee, a fracas, several fights broke out," UR Dean of Students Matt Burns said. But Burns said it was not a "riot" as reported in the university's Campus Times.
Even so, three campus safety officers were hospitalized with injuries they received while trying to break up fights. Burns said the university is reviewing what happened to decide what went wrong and what can be done to prevent such problems in the future.
Rochester Police did respond to help security, but did not file reports or make arrests. Department spokesman Steve Scott said they were not told anyone got hurt.
