Rochester, N.Y. - The Seneca Park Zoo announced Wednesday that its 21-year-old male sea lion died in his sleep.

The average life expectancy for a sea lion is 19.3 years, according to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Flounder was born at the zoo on June 20, 1991 and lived in the main building before the opening of the Rocky Coasts exhibit in 1997.

He was a popular feature of the summer sea lion demonstration for many years.

Zoo officials say there are no immediate plans to replace Flounder, as they have two other sea lions.  Both are three-year-old females.
