(Afghanistan /Churchville-Chili, N.Y.)  When a roadside bomb killed Staff Sergeant Nick Allen, it wasn't only an army losing a soldier; it was three young children losing a father.

"You might catch him with Grace, helping her learn to count, or putting her to bed and tucking her in,” said Allen’s father-in-law Michael Meehan. “He might be helping Michael with his homework, playing a video game together."

Allen's family came from across North America -- from California to Churchville, from British Columbia to Mississippi.

"Death is nothing at all. I've only slipped away into the next room. I am I and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, that we still are," said another mourner.

Nick Allen was 29 years old and had served his country for the last seven years.

He wasn't asked to fight for freedom. He asked his country to allow him to serve, after 9/11.

After two tours in Iraq, he was promoted and deployed to Afghanistan.

His father-in-law said that Nick answered his country's call. "He stepped up to serve his country because he knew it was his duty and the right thing to do."
