Albany, N.Y. – To help close the budget gap, Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed generating more money through speeding tickets.
Cuomo’s office claims because so many people plea down their speeding tickets, the state loses $58 million in fees.
To offset that loss, he wants to make it harder to plea down to a lesser traffic violation and tack an $80 surcharge onto that violation.
“It’s ridiculous,” said driver Nick Noto. “I don’t know what to say, I almost expect this now.”
Cuomo is also proposing creating new minimum fines for drivers caught using cellphones.
