Alfred, N.Y. -- A large fire at 3 Main Street in Alfred destroyed student apartments and businesses Thursday morning.

The Wellsville Daily Reporter reports that 13 Alfred students – 11 from Alfred University and 2 from Alfred State – lost everything in the fire that began around 6:30 a.m. The paper says The Collegiate Restaurant and West Side Wine and Spirits also sustained heavy damage.

According to a statement by Alfred University, the students who lived in apartments at the corner of Main and West University streets were all safe and accounted for but lost all of their possesions.

The school says other students who lived in apartments above other businesses in the town may also be displaced. The school is providing counseling and assistance to the students displaced by the fire.

Allegany County fire investigators are still investigating the cause. There are no reports of injuries.

Two of the Alfred students affected are from Rochester, and another is from Penfield.
