Rochester/Albany, N.Y. - “Don't cut education!” That's what hundreds of students from all across New York State will tell lawmakers in Albany Tuesday.
Governor Paterson has proposed major cuts to the state's Tuition Assistance Program (TAP).
The governor's proposed budget would cut millions from TAP in order to help close a $7.4 billion deficit. The tuition assistance program is just one several student aid programs in jeopardy.
This isn't just important for private universities and students, SUNY schools will see nearly $100-million slashed from their budgets too. Also, the governor now wants SUNY to set tuition rates, not the legislature.
Many students depend on TAP money to help them meet the soaring costs of higher education.
Tuesday they are making their case to lawmakers as part of the New York Student Aid Alliance Lobby Day.
