Families will pay a pretty penny to keep their children busy this summer.

According to new data from American Express, the 2012 summer break is set to cost an average American family $600.  And affluent families are expected to dish out nearly double that amount.

Most parents say they plan to spend a chunk of that money on trips to places like theme parks. But day camps are expected to be the biggest expense.
