Rochester, N.Y. --- When the little one in your life is all that matters, the little things in life are often a distant concern. That is just the way things are in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or NICU.
Connie Morgott never forgot her experience at Golisano Children’s Hospital seven years ago. Her son Dillon weighed barely two pounds when he was born and spent seven weeks in the NICU. Today Dillon wears a smile that never appears to leave his face.
He was with his mom on Wednesday when they delivered some 50 small totes to the NICU to be used by moms and dads as they keep those round-the-clock vigils on their own babies.
"I thought it would be great for the mothers to have,” Morgott said of the totes. “They have to bring their milk up they have to have snacks throughout the day, but a perfect way and to actually have something nice."
Morgott came up with the idea when a company she consults for was offering the totes on sale for just $10 each. She turned to friends, neighbors, and businesses in the community and found many willing to chip in to buy dozens of these designer totes.
Delivering them to the NICU on Wednesday Morgott even crossed paths with an old neighbor whose child was born last week and is now in the skilled hands of the nurses and doctors at Golisano Children’s Hospital.
“That's I think what means the most is it's not just us,” Morgott said. “There are so many babies in here every single day, there are so many families, we've had so many of our friends that lo and behold ended up in here whether it was for a day whether it was for weeks."
