Pittsford, N.Y. - Trader Joe's, which calls itself a neighborhood grocery store, is scheduled to open a new location in Pittsford Plaza much to the excitement of customers familiar with Trader Joe's through their own travels.

"I think it's great, I think it's about time they came into this area," said David Weidman, a Rochester area native who now lives in Massachusetts. "As far as them finding their niche? Trader Joe's...they have their own brand, and some people are brand specific these days, so if they know about it and see the sign, I'm sure they'll keep buying that brand."

The store carries its own line of food products, along with a list with information on gluten, fat, sodium and other contents.

In a stylish colorful listing, the store promises that their products carry no trans fats, artificial flavors, or genetically modified ingredients.

They offer recipes, "Guides for the Culinary Curious" and fanciful descriptions of products including the country and region of origin, and notes on texture and taste.

The store in Pittsford is scheduled to open by summer's end in 2012 and will be approximately 14,000 square feet. It will be the first Trader Joe's store in Upstate New York and the Pittsford Plaza ownership team said that wooing the chain to Rochester took the better part of three years. Customer surveys also indicated to the Wilmorite Corp. that Trader Joe's was either number 1 or number 2 on shopper's wish lists according to Dennis Wilmot.

Trader Joe's will move in just feet away from the Pittsford Wegmans, leading some to speculate about competition.

"I think it's great, I think they're in for a little competition because of our allegiance to Wegmans," Alicia Pender of Perinton said. "They carry a lot of different stuff and that's probably what is most attractive to me, because I'm so used to seeing the same old stuff on the shelves here."

"It'll be competition for Wegmans but maybe it will offer a little bit of choice for other people?" Michelle Turnbull of Brighton said.

"I think Trader Joe's would agree," Dennis Wilmot, Vice President of Wilmorite Corp said. "They decided to do this in this location. Clearly Wegmans was there and Wegmans is a terrific grocery store, the best in the country, but I think Trader Joe's feels like more of a compliment to each other than a competition."

Wegmans released a statement following the announcement that Trader Joe's would be moving into the location.

"Wegmans does not normally comment on competitors. However, I can tell you that when new competition moves into any of our market areas, we have a plan… to continue focusing on what we feel we do best. That would be incredible

customer service and helping customers make great meals easy to lead healthier and better lives."

Trader Joe"s is absolutely without question the BEST grocery store of it's kind, anywhere. I discovered it years ago while traveling extensively throughout the southwest and would spend hundreds of dollars "stocking up" til I would have a chance to go again. There is just no comparison to Wegman's, who most people think is the best store in the world (I disagree) Sure, if you want to spend hours trying to navigate around a store that sells more "stuff" than food, that's fine, but I would so much rather spend my time shopping for FOOD, and have fun doing it,and there is no comparison to it anywhere, and know what I'm eating because of their labeling, etc. And their prices are cheaper, believe it or not, you will see that for yourself when you start shopping there. I plan on being there on opening day and making my weekly grocery trip from way on the other side of town, than spend wasting my time wandering around Wegman's. I'm a Top's shopper, anyway. When I want food and groceries that's where I go. I don't need all the hype that Wegman's has to offer. If you have never shopped at a Trader Joe's, you are in for a very pleasant surprise ans I am sue there are many who will quickly switch their loyalties. Thank You, TJ's for coming to Rochester. Who needs Whole Foods and their outrageous prices anyways. I'm sure they will be next, though, and that is surely another store I can stay away from. Rochester is on the "MAP" people so get excited, it's about time we had something like this to look forward to and our wallet will thank us, too!! YAY is what I say, and so will you!!!!

Why will I make regular runs from Bath/Hornell area up to Rochester, NY to food shop? It's because all Trader Joe's products are labelled: NO artificial flavors, colors or preservatives! NO MSG! NO genetically modified ingredients, NO GMO's!!! NO added Trans Fat. NO READING EVERY LABEL!!! Shop with confidence for fantastic tasting healthy products priced well for gourmet foodies and everyday smart grocery store shoppers. Lot's of gluten free products! Check out their web page to really understand how lucky Rochester is - http://www.traderjoes.com/index.asp and for those of us who can now be within a day trip of a TJ"S!!! One of three wishes fulfilled, now can we get a Costco & and a Whole Foods store locally?

Despite Wegmans' quality, they have nonetheless limited product choice as they continually and ever-increasingly replace many delightful brand name products with their own products, some of which are simply not as good. I know that I speak for a number of other always-loyal customers when I say that this is a very unappealing and disappointing trend. Frankly, I look forward to spending more of my grocery dollars elsewhere and deeply look forward to the entry of Trader Joe's into the Rochester market! Hopefully, Whole Foods will be next!

I first discovered Trader Joe's when I visited a friend in Indianapolis and since that time I was hooked. When ever I went out of town and there was a Trader Joe's on the way back, I would make sure to bring a cooler and buy some groceries. They have an amazing selection of healthy, TASTY, alternatives that I feel Rochestarians will love. I'm sure this Trader Joe's will do very well in Pittsford and hopefully in years to come, more will show up. ` JoePetri.com

I LOVE Trader Joe's! I worked for I hope that they are able to open one of their TJ's Liquor Stores nearby ... because Two Buck Chuck is not the ONLY fine wine that Trader Joe's carries. TJ's carries appx. 3000 items ... Wegman's over 30,000 items ... so for quick-trips, Trader Joe's is small enough to get through quickly ... but they do NOT carry everything. So, if you need TIDE laundry detergent, or Dawn dish soap ... go to Wegmans next door!

Hey, look, WHAM actually opened up the comments section. Must be they don't foresee any controversy here. Nice, safe little story.

I've shopped at TJ's along with many other stores across the country. I'm sure I'll stop in TJ's when they arrive, but I always end up back at Wegmans.

So glad to hear that Trader Joe's is coming to Rochester! There is no competition between Wegmans and TJ's - two different types of grocery stores, both of which provide excellent products of different variety. Now if NYS would only allow wine sales in the grocery stores, we could then have access to "Two Buck Chuck"!!!
