Irondequoit, N.Y. - Firefighters rescued two people from a burning apartment building late Tuesday night.

Ridge Culver Fire Chief Peter Hendler says the fire started around 11:30 p.m. on the first floor of a building in Parkway Manor Apartments at Portland Parkway.

Two people were trapped on a fire escape and had to be rescued by firefighters.

The fire was contained to one apartment, but thick smoke from the fire caused heavy damage to several other apartments, making them unlivable.

Firefighters eventually brought the fire under control.

No one was injured, but five people were taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Fire investigators are working to determine how the fire started.
