Washington - A United States military force could stay in Afghanistan after the 2014 handover to Afghan authorities.

One top U.S. official says the Pentagon is considering a preliminary plan on the matter.

That official, who did not want to be identified, says any remaining forces would be used for counterterrorism missions, training Afghan forces, or assisting with logistics.
