Rochester, N.Y. – Up to 800 jobs could be on the way to the Rochester area because of the partnership between the University of Rochester and IBM.
The partnership dates back to 2008, when IBM gave the college a supercomputer for research. The University of Rochester’s vision is to add more of these supercomputers to expand research.
Recently the college was awarded $5 million from the state as part of the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Council. The expansion project would cost $100 million. A spokesperson at the University of Rochester says the college is hoping to get more money from IBM to help expand the project.
The potential jobs would not only be at the University, but in the surrounding area. There is no timeline yet on when the research growth could happen. The goal is to make it happen as quickly as possible.
