Washington D.C. - The Senate voted to renew the Violence Against Women Act Tuesday with support from both Republicans and Democrats.
It still needs approval from the House of Representatives.
The bill provides support to domestic violence victims and toughens sentences for stalking under federal law.
Rep. Louise Slaughter co-authored the original legislation that was first passed in 1994.
The act is up for another vote because Congress allowed it to expire in 2011.
