Webster, N.Y. – With fundraisers springing up left and right, West Webster firefighters are trying to manage the outpouring of generosity.
“It’s been overwhelming,” said Bryan Bayer, the firefighter in charge of this unenviable task.
Bayer has stayed in the station past midnight most nights organizing and monitoring.
He has to organize all the non-cash donations: food, gifts and water.
He has to monitor all the fundraisers run outside the department.
For example, several people have set up campaigns on the “crowdfunding” website, www.indiegogo.com.
Bayer contacted each person who set up an account to verify the campaign’s legitimacy.
He’s also asking everyone planning any kind of event to check in with the department.
He then promotes the fundraiser on the West Webster website alongside the departments own campaign.
“It’s fantastic that they’re going through those lengths for our people,” Bayer said.
Bayer says all the money raised will be divided evenly among the families of the four firefighters shot on Christmas Eve morning.
