Pittsford, N.Y.— While some of Abby Wambach’s family watched her earn Olympic gold in London, the rest were in Pittsford, watching the game with hundreds of friends and soccer fans. The U.S. Women's soccer team defeated Japan 2-1, achieving its 4th gold medal.
It is the team’s third consecutive Olympic title.
“It’s just being here with your family, your friends--they pulled through, it’s awesome,” said Laura Wambach, Abby’s sister.
Chants of “U-S-A” could be heard from the Back Nine Bar and Grill’s front lawn following the game.
“Everything that happened last year happened for a reason. It just makes it so much sweet,” said Matt Wambach, Abby’s brother and owner of the Back Nine.
The Wambachs are hopeful this is not the final big game for their prolific player.
“[The] World Cup is a big thing for her,” said Matt Wambach. “She has yet to get it, that’s what we’re pushing for. I’ll bet that’s what her goal is going to be.”
On September 1, Team USA will play Costa Rica at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester.
The game is expected to sell out according to a stadium official.
