Rochester, N.Y. – Loyal customers say they always knew Wegmans was number one. But now the grocery chain has earned the top spot in Consumer Reports survey of the best supermarkets in the country.

In a recent poll of 24,000 readers Wegmans earned high marks for customer service and cleaniness. The poll looked at more than 50 grocery chains across the country.

Readers were asked to vote on the best and worst supermarkets based on service, quality of food, price and cleanliness.

Wegmans spokeswoman Jo Natale released this statement about the honors:

“Wegmans is very pleased to be included in this list of supermarkets.  And obviously, we are thrilled with the results of a poll of more than 24,000 readers.  Our employees take our motto very seriously – Every day you get our best.  It’s gratifying to know that our customers recognize the hard work of all our employees.”

Shoppers tell us they aren't surprised that Wegmans was ranked number one. They raved about friendly service, good selection and the cleanliness of stores.

Sheri Petkus told us she never knew how much she loved Wegmans until she moved away: "When I moved away to California, I was shocked how far behind the other grocery stores were...I just felt like I was shocked I didn't have Wegmans anymore."

Other shoppers like Ginger Foreman said it was all about convenience and the fact that Wegmans has been "in the family for years."

Ginger told us: " I have shopped here, my mother shopped here, my granchildren."

Donna Dixon says she loves everything about Wegmans, from the selection of organic and health foods, to the clean stores and friendly cashiers.

Rosa Buza says she has shopped around and compared prices and always finds herself back at Wegmans.

Come this fall, Wegmans will have competition from the number two grocery chain in the Consumer Reports survey.

Trader Joes, known for its cult following and unique offerings, will open in Pittsford Plaza.

Shoppers say they will try the new store but say, they will still shop at Wegmans.

Many believe the competition is good and that both grocery stores can succeed, because they offer different things.
