Pittsford, N.Y. – Once or twice a year, Coach Whipple looks across the field and sees Coach Whipple.
Andrew Whipple coaches the Pittsford lacrosse team.
His brother, Craig, coaches lacrosse in Irondequoit, where both went to school.
“We’re both very competitive people and you want to win that game,” Andrew said. “There are times after I beat him, I'm extremely happy leaving the field, but when I get home I feel bad for him.”
Andrew shouldn’t feel too badly; Craig can claim more head-to-head victories.
On Sunday, two other brothers, Jim and John Harbaugh, will face off in the Super Bowl.
“Our hat goes off to them,” Craig said. “At the end of the day, it’s something they dream about, to be in the Super Bowl, but you always dream across the bedroom of beating your brother at something too.”
The Whipples can only beat each other in the regular season because their teams are in different classes.
Two years ago, both won sectional championships, much to the delight of their father.
“As best he can, he tries to stay neutral … He has an Irondequoit hat on and Pittsford coat,” Craig said. “Regardless of the outcome, he always has something to correct us on win or lose.”
