Albany, N.Y. — New York state's Board of Elections is considering regulations to make super political action committees (PACs) more accountable for their often nasty campaign ads that are supposed to be run independent of a candidate's campaign.
But good-government groups tell The Associated Press that the state board is eight months behind in approving the regulations. The groups say another election year is likely to elapse without tighter accountability for Super PACs operating in New York state.
The Board of Elections say Super PACs already had to abide by disclosure rules and the regulations will simply provide a better guide for showing who produced the campaign ads and other messages.
The New York Public Interest Research Group and the League of Women Voters are among the groups criticizing the regulations being considered by the board.
