Rochester, N.Y. – On Thursday, Rochester Mayor Tom Richards said he’ll leave the Olympic Games to larger cities, saying he’s perfectly happy hosting the Special Olympics.

That’s just what happened Saturday, as the New York State Winter Special Olympics began.

The figure skating competition took place at Genesee Valley Park, where Special Olympian Peter Dairey told us how much hard work he put into the event.

“A lot of practicing and a lot of competing and taking a lot of time to improve your skills,” Dairey said. “It felt great. I was having so much fun, I wasn’t ready to get off the ice.”

Other events Saturday included floor hockey, alpine skiing and snowshoeing. The games wrap up tomorrow at Genesee Valley, Swain Mountain, Bristol Mountain and the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.
